Glistening green peridot is the birthstone of August, a gem fondly known as the “emerald of the evening” as it is one of the few stones that do not change color when exposed to artificial light. This green-gold gem has a history that spans back to the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Greece and continues to be popular in fashion today.

History

Peridot has been mined as a gemstone for thousands of years. It can even be found in Egyptian jewelry from the 2nd Millenium B.C. The gem can be found near the Red sea and has been mined from St. John’s island for over 3,000 years. Peridot also comes from Australia, China, Brazil, and even Arizona and New Mexico. Peridot gems of the finest quality are found in Pakistan.

Color

Peridot is a yellowish green, glowing gemstone. It is one of the few gemstones that has only one color, a unique, bright green. The lustrous gemstone can be found in varying shades of apple, lime and olive green.

The intensity of color on the amount of iron present in the gem. A rich, green color with just a slight hint of gold is caused by fine traces of iron. Although peridot is sometimes confused with emerald, its yellow gold color is remarkably different than the dark shades of emerald green.

Cut

Peridot is not an easy gem for cutters to work with, yet gem-cutters are able to cut the stone into remarkably beautiful pieces. Cut in accordance with its crystal shape, peridots are usually faceted or cut in round, antique, oval or classical table cuts. Peridot is worth the effort because it is a gem with good wearing qualities that remains beautiful over time without any kind of special care.
